Knives aren’t just a handle and blade anymore, in fact, they now have extras added on that can save lives. One popular version to see is the pocket knife with a glass breaker. So if you’re on the market for a new knife, or want to buy one just because, here are a few additions you may want to look for.
Most of these extras are geared towards saving lives, your own or someone else’s, and for that reason alone should be considered.
1.Seatbelt Cutter
This often shows as a notch at the base of the handle on a folding knife, with a razor sharp blade inside. Capable of cutting a seatbelt faster than a knife alone, with a seatbelt cutter you also remove the risk of hurting the person wearing the seatbelt.
Now, you may be wondering if you really need one, but ask yourself this, are you willing to risk a person’s life because you didn’t have the means to cut them free?
2.LED Light
While this one may be a bit more difficult to find, it’s well worth the effort.
How the light is incorporated depends on the maker, with some having them set into the base of the handle and operated with a button, much like a keychain. Others are attached to the side, very similar how their larger counterparts are mounted on handguns.
3.Glass Breaker
This is a tiny metal bump on the bottom of the handle. Usually made from titanium or other similarly hard metal, glass breakers concentrate the force into a tiny point. Anyone who’s ever been trapped inside a car after a car accident or first on the scene understands how important a glass breaker can be.
In the case of self-defense, it can also be used as an additional striking point if you don’t have time to deploy the blade.
4.Blade Treatments
This one isn’t obvious to the naked eye, but soon apparent in how long the blade lasts. For example, if you have a high carbon steel knife, you’ve probably already got a coating on it to prevent rust and corrosion.
For stainless steel, a popular coating is titanium nitride which improves the durability of the blade. It’s very scratch and peel resistant, so it won’t come off two days after you get it, either.
Another treatment is to cryogenically freeze the steel, which hardens it more and can upgrade a medium quality steel to a high quality. Cryo treatment is often done in conjunction with a titanium nitride coating.
So next time you’re browsing, and you see a pocket knife with a glass breaker for sale, check and see if you can find any of these other extras. They may save a life, someday.
